Liquid Penetrant Testing is the most widely used surface method in industry — and the one where results depend most on the process being followed exactly. A penetrant is applied to a clean surface and drawn into surface-breaking discontinuities by capillary action, excess penetrant is removed, and a developer draws the trapped penetrant back out to form a visible or fluorescent indication far larger than the discontinuity itself. It finds cracks, laps, seams, porosity, and cold shuts in any nonporous material — metals, glass, ceramics, and many plastics — without regard to the part's magnetic properties or geometry.

Everything depends on control. Cleaning, penetrant dwell, removal technique, developer application, and inspection timing each have limits set by the procedure, and exceeding any one of them produces a clean-looking part that was never actually inspected. Fluorescent inspection adds ambient-light limits, UV-A intensity requirements, and eye adaptation time. Certification under NAS 410 or an employer's written practice requires documented training hours, experience, and examination — including a current near-vision and color-contrast test.
